This is something I got in an E-Mail. Some have probably seen it already. OK, now get out a tissue. My friend (from back a few years ago) and I would rate a movie by tissues like a really sad movie would be 4 tissues. This post is probably about 2 or 3 tissues. But it is good!

Did someone say, Auction!!

We went to an auction on Saturday and were surprised that there weren't very many people in attendance (and even less when the sun came out from behind the clouds). Well, they would ask what people wanted off a particular table and would auction those things off. Whatever was left on the table was auctioned together. We won quite a few lots for a buck or two. One lot had the nice glass snack trays with the cups to match that might be used for a tea party (I couldn't believe nobody wanted those). There was a huge pile of bedding, that I got for a buck, that had about 3 nice afghans that I thought I might try to sell. I got a box of books for a dollar or two. This box of books had the Anne of Green Gables set of 8 books (I didn't realize there were more than two). I haven't taken any pictures but if anybody is interested in seeing what we got I will take pictures and post them in the next few days.

My 100th post!!

I was going to try to figure something special to do for my 100th post but couldn't think of anything. Here's a commercial you folks that grew up in Ohio will recognize. My husband has sung this to me and he found it on the internet today. I hope you all from Ohio back in the 70's will enjoy.


While I'm at it here is a commercial that started in California in the 70's and at one point was in the Seattle area.

A funny from my 3 year old

My 3 year old is trying to be more and more independent. When I see him putting his shoe on the wrong foot I will say "other foot" so as he is taking his shoe off and starting to put it on the other foot he asks "this one Mommy?". Cracking me up!

My boys and I are coming back from a fast food run (I know, baaad), I hear my 7 year old, Luke say to his 5 year old brother, Matthew, (after Matthew says nobody loves him in the whole world, which just breaks my heart to hear) anyway, Luke says "even when I am mean to you, I still love you, even when Mommy or Daddy spanks you, they still love you". Luke was trying to console his brother. It was sweet and a little humorous at the same time. I feel I should add that I made sure he knew I do love him as well as his brothers and his Daddy and that God loves him even more than that. I told him when we get home I would give him a big ol' hug. Luke and Matthew are like "ewwww". I ask you, "What's wrong with a hug now and then?" They crack me up all the time.:-)

What Happened the Year You Were Born?

HULA HOOP
Richard Knerr and Arthur "Spud" Melin, founders of the Wham-O Company, are the architects of the biggest fad of all time - the hula hoop!
In 1957, an Australian visiting California told them, quite casually, that in his home country, children twirled bamboo hoops around their waists in gym class. Most of us would have thought, "how nice" but for Knerr and Melin an idea spawned.

They understood how popular such an item could be and proceeded to manufacture one made of plastic, Marlex specifically, a lightweight but durable plastic then recently invented by Phillips Petroleum.

The name "hula hoop" came from the Hawaiian dance its users seemed to imitate.

Talk about sales! Wham-O sold 25 million hula hoops in two months. Almost 100 million international orders followed. They were manufacturing 20,000 hoops a day at the peak of popularity.

Not all nations thought this was such a spiffy idea. Japan banned the hoops thinking they might promote improprieties. The Soviet Union said the hula hoop was an example of the "emptiness of American culture." Well, okay, maybe they had a point there :>)

The faze was short-lived. But our young entrepeneurs were already onto another hot idea they had. The Frisbee! (From the Pop History section)
Telephone Cramming Fads - Fifties Oddly enough, this fad began in South Africa, spread to England and then in 1959 went straight to - California!

The idea was to cram as many people as possible into a telephone booth. A competition sport, cramming soon spread across college campuses as each one tried to set a new record.

Sometimes called Telephone Box Squash, there were very few rules except that it was widely accepted that the booth must still contain a phone. Under British rules, you had to be able to be able to either place or receive a call, but that did not apply anywhere else. The door was left open and only half of a person must be inside the booth to be counted. And the booth had to upright.

The South African record of 25 people withstood all challengers. The English only made it to19 and hey, they had wider booths. A Canadian group made it to 40 but the booth was on its side and so that figure was discounted.

As for the spirit that built the West - the most efficient bunch we had was a group at St. Mary's College in Moraga, California.(Pictured above) In an effort to beat the South African record, they managed to cram 22 people in a booth. Well, you can't win them all.

Cramming expanded into other venues and VW Beetle cramming enjoyed a brief popularity. But like all good fads, this one ended rather quickly.(from fads of the fifties)

Now on to the 80's. This is an exciting time for you, when you met your husband to be. A wonderful man named Marty. We had a new niece come into the family in 1984 (she also was a sweetie, sister Terri and Neil's). And it is also a sad time as we grieved the death of our sweet and dear father.

In 1990 (I think anyway) you married Marty and moved to Nevada. A wonderful year for you! (And I married Mark in 1999 and moved to Ohio, a wonderful year for me!)

The 2000's brought 3 sweet nephews into our family (to you anyway, my sons). Another sad time for us was the passing of our precious mother (I will never stop missing Mom and Dad).

And you are just getting done with your masters (this week), what a great birthday present to yourself!!

Computer issues

Well, actually it's our internet phone but Mark unhooks the router to my desktop to see if that helps with the phone. Something like that anyway. I can hear who I am talking to but they can not hear me. I call my sister in Washington State to test it out and she understands that I can still hear her even if she can't hear me. She let's me know when it is acting up and stays on until I come back. It's a bummer because I am having to use my laptop and I do not know how to get my pictures to here. I am saying all that so people who care know why I haven't put the pictures on here that I talked about the other day. Hopefully tomorrow will be the last day without the desktop. Oh yeah, the mouse isn't working either. Hate when things like this happen. Oh, well, I will survive, I think. :-)

My Daddy died 18 years ago today

My Dad and Mom



Today I will think of my Daddy often for it is the anniversary of his death.
I hope you don't mind if I talk about him a bit.

He was an outdoorsman. He would hunt for deer and elk every Fall. I would be ready for beef by the summer after having the venison for so long.

My Daddy worked so hard. My Dad planted an orchard and worked hard taking care of it. I can remember him coming in from working on our family's cars with a lot of grease on his hands. He was on disability because of his heart so I was blessed to have him home all the time. I didn't realize until I was an adult that we were on the poor side. I guess when you feel loved, you don't go hungry, you have a roof over your head and you are happy playing with your little sister because the older siblings are off to school you don't see the negative side of things.

He loved to fish. I have a picture of me when I was about 3 with my Daddy. I was holding the fish he had caught (almost as big as me) and the story my parents told me was that I just had to hold that fish. When I was about 16 we went to Ocean Shores in Washington State (Washington is where I am from) and I got to go charter boat fishing with my Dad. I was the only girl on the boat and the youngest and I outfished everybody. I caught the biggest fish of the day and my Daddy couldn't have been any prouder. He did catch one fish. It was the ugliest fish I had ever seen, it was sea green inside and out. I asked my Dad if he was going to keep it and the way he said "yes" was like of course I am going to keep it. It was a flounder and very good when we had it for dinner.

In the few years before he passed away he would say things that he never talked about before. One time he told me that he should have said I love you more when me and my siblings were growing up. Before that I don't think I thought about it to much because I had always felt loved, don't get me wrong it is nice to hear those words but there was no doubt in my mind that my Dad and Mom loved me. Maybe it was because I could see how much they loved each other.
